Portraiture
TAIZ Masks creates documentary life cast portraits that physically capture a moment in time. The mixed media portraits may integrate wearable form fitted masks that conceal the identity of the face, representing the many layers of the self. Compact digital storage may be hidden inside the portrait to contain a personal archive of photos, video and music.
Commemorating an event with life cast portraiture preserves important milestones, dynamically capturing such rites of passage as weddings, birthdays, graduations and anniversaries in a three dimensional time capsule.
The artist’s perspective
The enduring fascination with our personal image began in the reflection of water. The sense of identity created by our facial presence has never been more important in defining ourselves than it is today. Our facial presence is tied to who we are and how we view ourselves. Concepts of who we think we are may be altered with masks. Oscar Wilde said, “give a man a mask and he will tell the truth.“
Inspiration to create wearable form-fitted masks led me to life casting. As my amazement with this art form grew, I developed Life Cast Systems, a unique process for casting the face. Life casts give us an opportunity to take a fresh and revealing look at the most familiar part of ourselves, for beyond the mirror of the mask lies the mystery within each face.
